The Emergency Medical Insurance known as Visitors to Canada
Insurance is an extremely important financial planning tool for
managing the risk of incurring huge amounts of medical expenses. It
is necessary for new immigrants until they qualify for provincial
health coverage, your parents, relatives and friends visiting you in
Canada.
You could take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the Visitors
to Canada new Insurance Policy that was introduced on June 15th,
2009. The most important enhancements in the new version are:
1. A new $150,000 coverage limit is introduced for ages up to 70.
The previous limits of $10,000, $15,000, $25,000, $50,000 and
$100,000 are still available. The bonus feature on the $100,000 limit
is still offered (when you purchase $100,000 maximum limit the
covered medical expenses resulting from an injury will be paid for up
to $150,000 at no additional cost).
2. A new $250 deductible amount is offered to more cost sensitive
people. The $50 and $0 deductible are still available.
Great News! The deductible is one amount per policy and per
person! Before June 15, 2009 the deductible amount was applied
on each claim.
3. Coverage under the new policies is provided for uninterrupted
flights to and from Canada at no additional cost. Before June 15,
2009 coverage was provided only during the trip to Canada only.
“Uninterrupted flight” means that the insured does not leave the
airport in the cities where he/she switches from one airline carrier to
another.
4. Emergency Medical Coverage can be purchased as well for up to
15 days for visits to other countries, after the departure from
the country of origin and before the arrival in Canada, and/or
for additional 15 days after leaving Canada and before arriving
back to your country of origin. The total number of days of
coverage you can purchase for countries other than Canada is 30,
provided that this total number is 49% or less of the number of days
you are going to spend in Canada.
5. The new insurance policies include at no additional charge
$10,000 of Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance.
6. Emergency Medical Expenses arising from acupuncture
treatment are included, as well as some complications of
pregnancy.
